The cricket world cup was beset with communications issues before it started – venues not being ready in time, teams having to move their practice sessions etc – but the death of Bob Woolmer has presented the organisers with a horrendous situation that they are going to have to deal with. Calls have been made to abandon the World Cup, but with all of the investment and sponsorship that has gone into it, the chances of it being abandoned are zero.
So how can the organisers recover from a human tragedy that presents a communications disaster? The best way for them to recover is to deliver an immaculate and trouble-free rest of the World Cup, so that people start discussing the cricket. Whether or not the infrastructure in the country is strong enough to support this remains a question unanswered. Unfortunately the untimely death will live long in many people’s memories, and no amount of disaster-recovery will be able to mask the real disaster.
